Computer Science Education Week – 2022

Computers continue to change the world, but they’re such a part of our daily lives that it can be easy not to recognize the impact they have. From student to teachers, engineers to business managers, healthcare to manufacturing, the science of computer technology is everywhere, and what better time to recognize and celebrate the positive impact that computer science has had on our lives than during Computer Science Education Week 2022.

An Important Purpose

CSEdWeek is in its 14th year calling stakeholders to action in order to help spread awareness and accessibility of computer science to all genders, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds. It’s a time to celebrate society’s push to inspire K-12 students to explore the options they have to learn about computer science and investigate possible future careers. The mission of CSEdWeek is to “inspire K-12 students to learn computer science, advocate for equity, and celebrate the contributions of students, teachers, and partners to the field.”

Hour of Code

One of the coolest parts of CSEdWeek is the “Hour of Code.” With a mission focus that “Every student in every school should have the opportunity to learn computer science,” the folks at Code.org commit to helping students “Explore the universe, score a goal, bust a move” as they try their hands and minds at computer science. “Hour of Code” is available to students year round, but in December, many different groups challenge students to spend an hour with millions of other students around the world, learning how to code and celebrating computer science.

Celebrating Computer Science

If you take even a few minutes to think about it, you can probably rattle off a pretty long list of how computer science impacts your daily life. To help you understand a little bit about the various industries computer science touches, here’s a quick list highlighting how it’s changed various parts of our lives.

Home

If you’ve got smart lights, a smart lock, a Google Home or Amazon Alexa, you’ve got firsthand knowledge of computer science in action. From using a gaming console, PC, tablet, or your phone to game or stream entertainment to banking and keeping track of your budget, most homes benefit from computer science in some way.

Education

Online classes, virtual labs & fieldtrips, drawing tools, video lectures, and the handy online gradebook are just a few ways that education has been forever changed by computer science. Thanks to computer science, you don’t have to carry around a backpack full of heavy books, you can most likely complete coursework from just about anywhere, and your digital work is far easier to keep track of than a wad of papers shoved in a folder!

Businesses

People who would never have thought they could start their own business in the past can do so now because of computer science. You can set up your own virtual marketplace and make all sorts of business connections thanks to computer science. Keeping track of expenses, orders, and services has never been easier, opening the door to success in business to more people than ever before.

Healthcare

Health records are kept organized, safe, and secure because of database management. New research and scientific breakthroughs are shared, and the diagnosis of diseases is much faster and more precise because of computer science.

Government

Today, citizens can access records and forms much more easily online, and it takes fewer staff members to manage government offices. Instead of waiting in long lines to renew your license plates or to request an important document, you can take care of these services online in a convenient and timely manner. Speeding up the work of government agencies while providing more accurate results is a fantastic improvement that everyday citizens get to see because of the accessibility and advances in computer science.

The Future of Computer Science

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that jobs for Computer and Information Research Scientists will grow 21% through 2031. That’s an incredible growth rate that ensures the future of computer science will be bright. Artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and Web 3.0 will continue to provide secure career pathways for those who want to learn the ropes in this lucrative field.

Washington Technical Institute

Washington Technical Institute’s courses are perfect for busy adults or for young people trying to figure out what field they want to jump into, and we’ve got lots of options in the computer science field to get you started on a pathway toward a secure career. Our certificate programs can be completed in a matter of months, with daily or bi-weekly start dates. Such flexible start dates make these programs unique and much more accessible for our students. Most of our certificates can be earned as a self-paced program, meaning that you can work at your own pace to complete your work, even finishing early if you have the time and motivation to do so. An additional benefit of WTI’s programs is that we offer affordable pricing and monthly payments to help our students leave school without debt.

Although our goal is to help our students graduate their programs with little to no debt, we also recognize that some students might need to utilize a loan for their educational investment. We are excited to announce our partnerships with Climb Credit or Ascent, student lending companies focused on financing career-building programs.

If you’re ready to enroll and start working on a plan for the personal and professional benefit of professional development, you can register for your program online through our website.
