The Washington Technical Institute Business Law certificate provides students with practical legal knowledge of substantive business law topics and current legal issues. Students learn the skill sets necessary to identify and manage legal issues encountered within personal and business contexts, including litigation, contract law, employment and human resources, real and personal property law, as well as applied critical thinking.

The benefit of students purchasing this software themselves is that all the work they do will stay with them and they will have access to it after they complete their program with WTI.

Curriculum

BUS-300: Introduction To Business

In this up-to-date, comprehensive survey, BUS-300 addresses forms of business ownership, management and organization, human resources management, marketing, social media and e-business, information systems, accounting, and finance. Core topics emphasize ethics and social responsibility, small business and entrepreneurship and global issues, while new coverage examines the impact of social media on business, international business, green and socially responsible business, and sustainability

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Define business and identify potential risks and rewards.
  • Identify the types of ethical concerns that arise in the business world.
  • Explain the economic basis for international business.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of business ownership.
  • Describe the four basic management functions: planning, organizing, leading and motivating, and controlling.
  • Describe the major components of human resources management.
  • Explain why it is important for a business to use social media to promote their business.

BUS-312 Foundations of Business Law

In this introductory course to Business Law, students are provided the context and essential concepts across a broad range of legal issues with which managers and business executives must deal with. The text provides the vocabulary and legal savvy necessary for business people to talk in an educated way to their customers, employees, suppliers, government officials, and their own lawyers. BUS312 also utilizes case studies and relevant, law-related videos to help students comprehend and internalize their learning.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Distinguish different philosophies of law and schools of legal thought.
  • Describe the two different court systems in the United States, and explain why some cases can be filed in either court system.
  • Describe what a contract offer is, and what proposals are not offers.
  • Understand how warranty theory works in products liability, and its limitations

BUS-410 Advanced Business Law

This course is appropriate for students who have already taken an introductory Legal Environment or Foundations of Business Law course. BUS-410 provides students with context and essential legal concepts relating to Negotiable Instruments, Business Associations, Debtor and Creditor Relations, and various aspects of property law. The course textbook provides the vocabulary and legal savvy necessary for business people to talk in an educated way to their customers, employees, suppliers, and other stakeholders — and to their own lawyers.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Distinguish different philosophies of law and schools of legal thought.
  • Describe the two different court systems in the United States.
  • Explain the historical importance and basic structure of the US Constitution. 

BUS-413 Law for Entrepreneurs

BUS413 is a course that provides a thorough background in a wide variety of legal concepts to help entrepreneurs successfully manage a business. Besides a background in the fundamentals of legal business issues, this course also covers topics such as: agency law, liability of principal and agent, partnerships, hybrid business forms, securities regulation, employment law, labor-management relations, and consumer credit transactions. The exercises and case studies give the student the opportunity to relate these topics to their everyday, relevant experiences.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Understand the legal aspects of becoming an entrepreneur.
  • Explain the importance of legal representation when operating a business.
  • Understand the basics of incorporating, founders’ stock, and buy-sell agreements.
  • Explain the major employment and civil rights legislation that affect businesses.
  • Understand the complex legal implications of business contracts and leases.
  • Learn about business operational liabilities, insurance, and compliance.
  • Understand the implications of creditors’ rights and bankruptcy.
  • Describe the nature of securities regulation and its importance.

BUS-414 Law of Commercial Transactions

This course focuses on the legal aspects related to contracts, sales, commercial paper, debtors and creditors. BUS-414 provides practical information regarding sales and leases, title and risk of loss, performance and remedies while explaining the legal regulations involved with products liability, bailments, and the nature and form of commercial paper. This course also explores consumer credit transactions in depth and outlines the crucial knowledge when considering bankruptcy.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Understand what is meant by “commercial transactions” and how they are dealt with.
  • Identify circumstances the buyer can obtain title when a nonowner sells the goods.
  • Identify the interests that are protected by contract remedies.
  • Understand what performance is expected of the buyer and seller in a sales contract.
  • Identify the types of commercial paper the role it plays in economics and finance.
