At Washington Technical Institute, we are committed to protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all student records.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the confidentiality of student education records at schools receiving federal funds. Because WTI does not receive federal or state funding, we are not legally required to comply with FERPA; however, we voluntarily follow FERPA guidelines to uphold the same high standards of student privacy.
Under our policy, educational and financial information is released only to the student if the student is 18 years of age or older. For students under 18, records may be released to the student and/or their parent or legal guardian. To authorize the release of information to another individual, students must submit a Student Information Release Form.
Without this written consent, WTI staff cannot discuss student grades, tuition, or account details with any third party. For example, if a relative or friend contacts the school requesting information about your record, we will not disclose details unless you are under 18 and the person is your legal guardian. This policy ensures that your personal information remains secure and confidential. In limited circumstances, records may be released without consent as required by law — such as to accrediting organizations, to comply with a court order or subpoena, or in cases of legitimate educational interest.
WTI takes all privacy concerns seriously and addresses them promptly in accordance with our Notification of Student Record Release policy. For more information about FERPA, you may visit the U.S. Department of Education’s website at https://www2.ed.gov/policy/gen/guid/fpco/ferpa .
