HEALTH-201: Medical Terminology

This online health course in medical terminology provides students with the skills to understand, build, and apply the language of healthcare. Learners study root words, prefixes, and suffixes to accurately interpret terms related to anatomy, physiology, disease, and treatment. The course also explores specialized terminology for mental health, pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, pharmacology, and diagnostic procedures. Course Description

HEALTH-201: Medical Terminology introduces students to the specialized language of healthcare, equipping them with the ability to define, construct, and accurately apply medical terms. Using Comprehensive Medical Terminology for Health Professions by Schroeder, Ehrlich, and colleagues, students will explore the structure of medical words—including prefixes, suffixes, and root forms—and apply them to describe body systems, diseases, diagnostic procedures, and treatments.

The course covers all major body systems as well as specialty areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, oncology, pharmacology, and complementary medicine. By learning medical terminology in clinical context, students develop communication skills that are essential for precision in medical records, patient care, and professional interactions.

This course is designed for learners pursuing careers in nursing, allied health, medical assisting, coding, billing, or other healthcare roles where accurate use of medical language directly supports patient safety and professional practice.
