MEDC-102: Medical Coding- CPT/HCPCS

This online medical coding course builds on ICD-10 training by introducing CPT and HCPCS, the coding systems used to report medical procedures, services, and supplies. Students will gain hands-on practice coding physician services, outpatient visits, diagnostic testing, and surgical procedures across multiple body systems. With an emphasis on modifiers, sequencing, and compliance, this course prepares students for accurate claims submission, reimbursement, and entry-level coding certification exams.

Course Description

MEDC-102: Medical Coding II: CPT/HCPCS provides students with specialized training in coding for medical services and procedures. Using Understanding Current Procedural Terminology and HCPCS Coding Systems by Mary Jo Bowie, learners will explore the purpose, structure, and application of CPT and HCPCS codes.

The course covers coding across all major body systems, including integumentary, musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, urinary, reproductive, and nervous systems. Students will also gain experience coding for anesthesia, maternity care, radiology, pathology, laboratory testing, and therapeutic services. HCPCS coding introduces supplies, equipment, and ancillary services essential for outpatient and insurance claims.

By the end of the course, students will be able to apply modifiers, follow coding guidelines, and accurately code services for compliance and reimbursement. This training is essential for careers in medical coding, billing, auditing, and health information management, while also preparing students for certification exams requiring CPT/HCPCS proficiency.
