PLAW-101: Introduction to Paralegalism provides students with a comprehensive overview of the paralegal profession, combining an introduction to the legal system with the practical skills needed for success in law-related careers. Using Introduction to Paralegalism: Perspectives, Problems and Skills by William P. Statsky, this course explores the paralegal’s role in law offices, courts, and administrative agencies, while also examining professional ethics and regulation of the field.
Students will develop foundational skills in legal research, writing, interviewing, and investigation, along with experience using the technology and administrative tools common in law office environments. Practical applications—such as litigation support and advocacy—are paired with an understanding of attorney-paralegal collaboration and professional responsibilities.
By the end of the course, students will have both the theoretical knowledge and practical foundation to pursue entry-level paralegal roles or continue their studies in legal studies, criminal justice, or pre-law programs.
