HCA-101: Health Information Management introduces students to the core principles and practices of managing health information in modern healthcare settings. The course begins with an overview of healthcare delivery systems and the role of HIM professionals in ensuring accurate, accessible, and secure patient records. Students will study the transition from paper-based records to electronic health records (EHRs) and health information exchanges, gaining insight into how technology supports patient care and organizational efficiency.
Emphasis is placed on documentation requirements, numbering and filing systems, data indexing, and registries, all of which are essential for effective record management. Legal and ethical considerations are also examined, including HIPAA compliance, confidentiality, and procedures for releasing information. In addition, students are introduced to reimbursement methodologies, coding fundamentals, and the revenue cycle, providing a broad understanding of how health information management supports financial and regulatory compliance.
Designed for students beginning a career in health administration, coding, or HIM, this course provides both professional context and technical skills. By the end, students will be prepared to apply foundational knowledge of data collection, security, and recordkeeping in entry-level roles or advanced study in the health information field.
