The Employment and Labor Law course provides students with an essential understanding of how workplace rights and responsibilities are shaped by legal and regulatory frameworks in the United States. Using Employment and Labor Law, 10th Edition by Patrick J. Cihon and James Ottavio Castagnera, the course examines employment contracts, wrongful termination, workplace torts, employee privacy, and equal employment opportunity (EEO) laws.
Students will explore how disputes between employees, employers, and labor organizations arise and are resolved through legal and ethical processes. Topics include discrimination law, unionization, collective bargaining, unfair labor practices, strikes, and the enforcement of labor agreements. Additional focus is given to safety legislation, benefits laws, and how globalization influences employment practices and labor relations.
Designed for non-legal students, this course emphasizes practical applications rather than technical legal expertise. It prepares learners to navigate workplace challenges in compliance with labor laws while promoting fairness and ethical decision-making. By the end of the course, students will have the knowledge to recognize legal risks, evaluate workplace issues, and apply employment and labor law concepts in careers such as human resources, management, and organizational leadership.
