PLAW-203: Criminal Law

Gain a foundation in criminal law and procedure, exploring crimes, defenses, constitutional protections, and the criminal justice process.

Course Description

PLAW-203: Criminal Law provides students with a structured introduction to the principles of criminal law and procedure in the United States. Using Criminal Law and Procedure by Daniel E. Hall, this course examines the elements of crimes, categories of offenses against persons, property, and the public, as well as incomplete crimes and the role of accomplices.

Students will explore constitutional protections and defenses, including the legal standards that govern searches, seizures, interrogations, and surveillance. The course also traces the stages of the criminal process, from pretrial and trial through sentencing and appeal, connecting legal theory with practical case applications.

By the end of the course, students will understand both substantive criminal law and the procedural safeguards that ensure fairness in the justice system—preparing them for roles in paralegal practice, criminal justice, or continued study in law.
