The Master Paralegal Certificate is Washington Technical Institute’s most comprehensive paralegal credential, designed for students and working professionals seeking advanced preparation for certification and career advancement. This 45-credit program builds from foundational studies to mastery-level proficiency across all major areas of law and professional practice, aligning closely with NALA’s Certified Paralegal (CP/CLA) exam domains.
Students begin with core foundation courses in Introduction to Paralegalism, Legal Terminology, Introduction to Law, and Legal Research & Writing, gaining a deep understanding of the American legal system and the paralegal’s essential role within it. They then progress to professional practice courses in Legal Ethics and Law Office Management, where they develop ethical reasoning, administrative expertise, and practical law office skills critical to real-world success.
The program’s advanced curriculum includes eight substantive law courses that provide breadth and depth across key disciplines—Contracts, Civil Litigation, Torts, Criminal Law, Real Estate, Corporate, Family, and Constitutional or Intellectual Property Law. These courses emphasize case analysis, document drafting, litigation support, and the application of law to complex scenarios encountered in both public and private sectors.
The program concludes with the Paralegal Certification Prep Capstone, an intensive review of core paralegal competencies using Paralegal Today: The Legal Team at Work. This capstone integrates legal theory with practical application, helping students prepare for professional certification and transition confidently into advanced paralegal roles.
NALA Exam Eligibility
The Master Paralegal Certificate meets and exceeds NALA’s requirement of at least 15 semester hours of substantive legal coursework. Students who complete this 45-credit program and meet NALA’s additional academic or experiential criteria may qualify to sit for the Certified Paralegal (CP/CLA) exam.
If you have no prior college credit, Washington Technical Institute can help you fulfill NALA’s Category 1 eligibility requirement of 60 total semester hours, including at least 15 in substantive law. Students in the Master Paralegal Certificate program can complete their remaining 15 credits by selecting general education electives, ensuring they meet the full 60-credit requirement for certification eligibility.
