Description

The Washington Technical Institute Undergraduate Certificate in Business Administration consists of five courses and can help you take initial steps toward furthering your business education and creating opportunities in the business world.

With relevant foundational topics like introduction to business, management, marketing, economics, and business law, you’ll gain the knowledge that can be applied across various industries while studying on your schedule. The curriculum gives an overview of essential areas that are relevant to business leaders and decision-makers. This program is 630  clock hours and offers 15-college credits from a regionally accredited institution.

Students will complete the following courses to earn the Undergraduate Certificate in Business Administration

BUS-300 Introduction to Business
BUS-101 Business Principles and Management
BUS-306 Principles of Marketing
BUS-103 Economics
BUS-104 Business Law

This certificate may appeal to those who wish to:

Students will need to have access to the internet as well as a computer that can work with the software used in this program. Using a Chromebook, tablet, or phone will not be possible for this program given the nature of the material. Most software used will be open-source, free downloads. However, students may need to purchase short-term subscriptions to software. The benefit of students purchasing this software themselves is that all the work they do will stay with them and they will have access to it after they complete their program with WTI.

Curriculum

BUS-300: Introduction To Business

In this up-to-date, comprehensive survey, BUS-300 addresses forms of business ownership, management and organization, human resources management, marketing, social media and e-business, information systems, accounting, and finance. Core topics emphasize ethics and social responsibility, small business and entrepreneurship and global issues, while new coverage examines the impact of social media on business, international business, green and socially responsible business, and sustainability

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Define business and identify potential risks and rewards.
  • Identify the types of ethical concerns that arise in the business world.
  • Explain the economic basis for international business.
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of various forms of business ownership.
  • Describe the four basic management functions: planning, organizing, leading and motivating, and controlling.
  • Describe the major components of human resources management.
  • Explain why it is important for a business to use social media to promote their business.

BUS-101: Business Principles and Management

BUS-101 exposes students to a wide variety of Business topics. Specifically, this course addresses forms of business ownership, management and organization, human resources management, marketing, social media and e-business, information systems, accounting, and finance. Core topics emphasize ethics and social responsibility, small business and entrepreneurship and global issues, while new coverage examines the impact of social media on business, international business, green and socially responsible business, and sustainability.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Compare and contrast needs and wants, distinguish between goods and services. 
  • Define gross domestic product, describe economic measures of labor.
  • Describe importing and exporting activities and list factors that affect global currencies.
  • Discuss role of business in the U.S. economy, describe the three major types of business. 
  • Describe the levels of management in businesses and organizations.

BUS-306: Principles of Marketing

In this introductory Marketing course, students learn the experience and process of actually doing marketing, not just the vocabulary associated with it. BUS306 is broken into five dominant themes of marketing: service dominant logic, sustainability, ethics and social responsibility, global coverage, and metrics. There is also updated coverage of developments in the influence of social media to empower consumers and marketing’s use of social media. This includes sentiment analysis, mobile marketing, and customer service and complaint tracking as a communications and promotions channel.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Define marketing and outline its components.
  • Describe the different types of product strategies and market entry strategies that companies pursue.
  • Understand the branding decisions firms make when they’re developing new products.
  • Explain the laws that regulate online and other types of marketing.

BUS-103: Economics

BUS-103 Economics takes a "just-in-time" approach to explaining the principles of Economics and introduces material just as it is needed to develop an argument. Clear and interesting exposition combines with case studies, recent research findings, and a focused design.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Understand core economic principles and how they apply to real-world issues.
  • Explain theoretical and applied tools necessary to critique and create economic research.
  • Evaluate the consequences of economic activities for individual and social welfare.
  • Identify major economic characteristics of selected world regions.

BUS-104: Business Law

BUS-104 examines the stages of starting a business while highlighting legal and strategic decisions. Students increase their legal literacy as they learn to choose the form of business entity, structure ownership, raise money, handle operational liabilities, practice strategic compliance, protect intellectual property, deal with creditors, go global, and go public. Students also examine such current issues as classifying workers as independent contractors or employees, cybersecurity, and provisions for "mini-IPOs."

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Understand the legal aspects to becoming an entrepreneur. 
  • Explain the importance of legal representation when operating a business.
  • Understand the basics of incorporating, founders’ stock, and buy-sell agreements.
  • Explain the major employment and civil rights legislation that affect businesses. 
  • Understand the complex legal implications of business contracts and leases.
  • Learn about business operational liabilities, insurance, and compliance.
  • Understand the implications of creditors’ rights and bankruptcy.
