This course provides a condensed, four-week session designed to provide an overview of both substantive and procedural criminal law concepts. The course is based on leading criminal law courses taught at major law schools and is tailored for the criminal justice professional.

Subject Include:

Crimes against persons
Crimes against property
Legal defenses, such as the insanity defense
Theory and history of criminal justice
Practical skills exploration of the criminal justice process

In addition to these concepts, the course presents thought-provoking examples from the annals of the criminal justice system to aid in understanding. Curriculum

CJ-600 reflects the latest laws, regulations, and practices in the field, delivering extensive coverage of every aspect of the law and detailing the duties a paralegal is expected to perform. This course combines high-level, comprehensive coverage of both criminal law and criminal procedure with recent developments, foundational concepts, and emerging trends such as terrorism, treason, and national security crimes; cyber stalking; virtual child pornography; corporate crime; and racial profiling. Case excerpts promote case analysis skills, while learning aids help sharpen students' problem solving and analytical skills.

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

Describe the basic constitutional structure of state and federal governments with an emphasis on how structure affects criminal law and criminal justice administration.
Identify and describe the objectives and sources of criminal law.
Identify and define the two basic elements of most crimes, mens rea and actus reus.
Explain, and compare the elements of common law and contemporary crimes.
Understand specific rights, such as freedom from double jeopardy, to speak, to practice one’s religion, to privacy, to be treated equally, substantive and procedural due process.
Identify and explain the landmark Supreme Court cases.
