This course examines the major ethical dilemmas that confront criminal justice professionals throughout their careers. Students are exposed to the philosophical principles of ethical decision-making. Students also examine issues-based, practical approaches to ethical issues found in all three branches of the criminal justice system-police, courts, and corrections. Policy issues are reviewed and students are encouraged to engage in discussions of key topics in professional ethics and the delicate balance between law and justice.

Curriculum

This course offers comprehensive coverage of ethics across the criminal justice system. CJ-500 presents the philosophical principles and theories that are the foundation of ethical decision making, as well as challenges and issues in criminal justice--the Black Lives Matter movement and the Ferguson Effect, the militarization of the police, mass imprisonment, wrongful convictions and the misuse of power, among others. The course includes digital learning solutions that power students' mastery of key concepts while engaging them with video cases, career scenarios, visual summaries, and more.

Course Objectives:

Throughout the course, you will meet the following goals:

  • Explain why the study of ethics is important for criminal justice professionals.
  • Define deontological and teleological ethical systems.
  • Describe the three themes included in the definition of justice.
  • Describe psychological theories that attempt to explain differences in behavior.
  • Describe the justifications for law, including protections against harm to others, offensive conduct, harm to self, and harm to societal morals.
  • Describe the history and source of legal ethics for attorneys and judges.
  • Describe the ethical issues faced by prosecutors, defense attorneys, and judges.
